Rebuilding Together Miami Rehabs 15 homes in Coconut Grove for National Rebuilding Day 2008

April 26th, 2008

Rebuilding Together Miami was one of 200 affiliates nationwide who participated in National Rebuilding Day Saturday April 26, 2008. More than 250 volunteers turned out to repair 15 Coconut Grove homes to keep the elderly homeowners safe and dry.

Local contractors, Coconut Grove residents, University of Miami students and friends of Rebuilding Together gathered at St. Matthews Community Baptist church early Saturday morning to divide up the work. More than 50 UM students including fraternity brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon volunteered. Peter Gardner of Pointe Group Advisors brought along 30 first time volunteers. The local contractors sponsor a home completing the skilled tasks needed while the volunteers fill in with painting, caulking, cleaning and landscaping chores. Work ranged from new kitchens and bathrooms and energy efficient upgrades to home modifications for disabled homeowners and newly painted homes inside and outside. Mayor Manny Diaz, City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff and County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez were there to lend their support of this vital community service. They along with the homeowners thanked the volunteers and contractors. Mrs. Velma Harris echoed the sentiments of the homeowners when she exclaimed “I am so satisfied, I am not myself. I come home and I don’t believe that it is my house.
