MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) - Volunteers came together to help an elderly Miami Gardens man repair his home after he was injured while on the job.

Since he moved to Miami-Dade from Peru in the 1980s, 76-year-old Carl Martinez was a handyman who did everything from working on cars to driving a waste truck, however after suffering an injury 10 years ago, he has not been able to upkeep his home. "My house is looking so-so," he said. "Now it's looking good."

Martinez is grateful for the Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade organization and volunteers from Prologis, a global realty logistics firm for coming together to rebuild his home. "So there's exterior painting. Two colors though, all over the trim, the full body," said Alex Rosales, the program coordinator for Americorps. "Then we're gonna do some minor landscaping work and yard work."

Martinez is also receiving a healthy home kit which contains a fire extinguisher, some smoke alarms and some energy-efficient lightbulbs.

Prologis donated funds and provided volunteers to make the restoration possible. "I think we have a social responsibility to makes sure that residents are, number one, represented," Rosales said. "A lot of them worked and gave their time, so I think it's about time we do the same."

Martinez appreciates the efforts. "I'm very happy," he said. "Thank you. God bless you."
