SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. -- Volunteers were hard at work revamping an Army veteran's home, Saturday.
"Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade" received a $15,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation to remodel 67-year-old Charles O'Day's home. He has lived there for 15 years but has struggled with its maintenance because of financial burdens and disabilities.
Volunteers were happy to dedicate their time to give Charles and his family the safe and healthy home they deserve. "One of their sons, Carlos, is currently in a wheelchair. He has spinal muscular dystrophy. What we are aiming to do is make his bathroom handicap accessible, so he can easily roll in the shower and roll out," said one volunteer.
Just as this veteran served his country, members of his community decided it is time that they serve him. Other repairs on the home will include full roof replacement, tiling and flooring, ADA bathroom modifications, widening doorways and exterior painting.
