May 4, 2012
Miami, FL – Heroes at Home, a program created through the collaboration of Sears Holdings Corporation and Rebuilding Together, announced the beginning of their spring 2012 Heroes at Home projects. Heroes at Home projects are key initiatives for Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, and strive to improve the lives of the military and their families through extensive home rehabilitations.
Rebuilding Together Miami assisted a veteran in the Cutler Bay area of South Florida. Mr. Knight served in the United State Navy from 1967 to 1969, and was honorably discharged from the service in 1973. Today, Friday May 4, 2012 was the completion date for Mr. Knight’s home in which 37 volunteers from Rebuilding Together, Sears, the Coast Guard, and Johnson & Wales University contributed their efforts. These volunteers were in charge of exterior painting and yard cleanup for the Knight house, while the major repairs, including a new roof, renovating two bathrooms, and ADA accessibility modifications occurred in the weeks prior to the service day.
As the volunteers were putting the finishing touches on the house, Mr. Knight said, "Bless you. The house is beautiful; thank you all for coming out." Rhina Rubio, Southland Sears store manager was thrilled with the turnout of 22 Sears employees, some of whom are repeat Heroes at Home volunteers. The Knight house is the twentieth home that Rebuilding Together Miami has completed under the Sears Heroes at Home initiative.
"Heroes at Home is not only a program, but an opportunity for us to serve our fellow veterans and address their critical housing needs, which are quite common throughout military households," said Gary A. Officer, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. "Our work with Sears allows us to engage with the veteran community and rehabilitate their homes to livable conditions based on their needs. This spring, we continue to impact an increasing amount of lives through the Heroes at Home program."
Heroes at Home projects are scheduled to be completed in more than 80 cities across the country. The projects include renovations for veterans who are unable to live in their current home conditions, due to injuries or obstacles that threaten their avenue to a safe and accessible home.
To date, Sears Holdings has raised over $15 million for Heroes at Home through a nationwide in-store fund-raising campaign. This is one of the hundreds of projects made possible by these donations. Rebuilding Together has completed over 1,100 projects for veteran homeowners across the country. The success of this program is only expected to rise as more projects are completed.
