Volunteers Remake Home for Veteran

For Immediate Release

March 31, 2015

MIAMI, Fla. A Veteran in need of a home makeover received it Tuesday after some volunteers stepped in to help.

Several good Samaritans donated their time and energy to assist 85-year-old Korean War Veteran Vergaree Brown.

Rebuilding Together Miami Dade, along with 20 volunteers from Lowe's, worked on the home where Brown has resided in for more than 40 years. "It's very satisfying to help people," said Executive Director of Rebuilding Miami Dade, Donna Fales. "It is so gratifying. Most of our applicants are so appreciative. They now have a home that is safe, dry. The deferred maintenance that they lived with for so long is always a problem for them. We take care of putting roofs and repairs while they take care of food and medicine with their fixed income."

The bathrooms and kitchen were renovated, as well as new paint on the inside and outside of the house. The project was all part of a $10,000 grant from Lowe's. "Well, it makes me feel good, and it makes me wish that I could've done the same thing back in the time, but I really feel good for them doing this now and hope that, you know, somebody else will come up and do the same," said Brown.

Brown also said he was touched by the many people who came out to help him. "Making me feel like a young man again," he said. "Really making me feel good."

The volunteers also worked on Brown's yard, who said he plans on throwing a large block party to celebrate.
