Miami, Florida - - Heroes At Home, a program created through the partnership of Sears Holdings Corporation and Rebuilding Together, announced the beginning of their fall 2010 Heroes At Home projects. This Saturday, September 25, 2010 Rebuilding Together Miami and Sears will work on the home of Jorge Garcia in Homestead. Heroes At Home is a key initiative for Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership, and is dedicated to improving the lives of the military and their families through extensive home rehabilitations.
Rebuilding Together Miami has chosen a family of veterans for the fall Heroes at Home program. Jorge Garcia, 86 years old, is a veteran of WWII. He has lived in his home for 30 years and raised five children, four of whom have served in the military. His daughter, Maria, age 59, a former US Army National Guard reservist, lives with her father and takes care of him. Their home is in need of repairs and modifications for wheelchair accessibility. Volunteers from the University of Miami School of Business will be helping to rehabilitate the Garcia home.
“Heroes at Home is a key program that is essential to the mission and vision of Rebuilding Together,” said Gary A. Officer, President and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “Sears Holdings has allowed us to reach out to more veterans than ever before and make life-changing renovations to veterans’ homes. This fall we will experience even more homes and lives being impacted through the Heroes at Home program.”
Heroes At Home projects will be completed in more than forty cities across the country. The projects include renovations for our nation’s veterans who are unable to live in their current home conditions, due to injuries or obstacles that threaten their avenue to a safe and healthy home.
To date, the Heroes at Home program and Sears Holdings has raised over $13 million for Heroes at Home through a nationwide in-store fund-raising campaign. This is one of the hundreds of projects made possible by these donations. Rebuilding Together has completed over 750 projects for veteran homeowners across the country. The success of this program is only expected to rise as more projects begin.
Heroes At Home fall rebuilds are slated to begin the first week of September and will continue through November.
